Debate In Israel
(N .Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) JERUSALEM, February 20 Israel’s Parliament holds a crucial debate today on a demand for abolition of the military government in the border areas—an issue which some observers say may bring down the Government. The entire Opposition will probably press the demand in the debate. The Left-wing Ahduth Haavoda Party, partner in Mr David Ben-Gurion’s Coalition Government, is expected to join it People demonstrated in favour of the abolition last night in Jerusalem. Regulations allowing the military authorities to administer the areas, inhabited Chiefly by Arabs, have existed since Israel was founded in 1948. but a move to abolish them has been growing in strength recently. Mr Ben-Gurion said recently he regards the present system as essential for Israel’s security He said he would seek the people’s decision through general elections if Parliament voted against him.
Tornadoes Hit Florida
f W ZJPA.~Rmter—Copyright) MIAMI (Florida), Feb. 19. Tornadoes and high winds battered central Florida today, killing a tourist whose car was plucked from-a roadway and hurled 100 ft into Tampa Bay. The winds hit holiday areas, causing thousands of dollars worth of damage. United Press International reported.
