Women’s Bowls Post-Section Play Begins In Fours Title

The first day of post-section play in the fours at the New Zealand women’s bowling tournament was held yesterday in brilliant sunshine. The greens were running fast and true, and fours able to produce precision drawing were the ones who were successful.

When play finished late last evening there were nine fours still left in, but two are one round behind on account of the byes. The skips in the round behind are Mrs A. Nankivell (Woolston) and Mrs A. Forbes (Burwood), and they will play at 8.30 a.m. today at the same time as the final of the pairs. The field will then be reduced to eight and the quarter-finals will commence at 11 a.m.

Mrs A. Wilkie (Lower Hutt), a finalist in the pairs, led her four well in the first game and beat Mrs L. McKenzie (Woolston) 30-16 with one head unplayed. A very dour struggle was seen in the next game when Mrs Wilkie met Mrs W. Black (Waimate). Lower Hutt held shot on the last head to win 17-16. Mrs Wilkie was beaten in the last game of the day by Mrs Parsons (R.S.A., Invercargill). Mrs E. Edyvean (Richmond, Christchurch), skip of the winning pair at Dunedin in 1961, was matched against the other pairs finalist, Mrs I. Opie (Hawera), and won 23-15. Mrs Edyvean was beaten in the next round by Mrs E. Parsons. Mrs L. Tricker (Lower Hutt), who is defending her title, in her first game swamped Mrs A. Whale (Momington) 33-8 with three heads left unplayed. Mrs Tricker was beaten in the next game when she met a four from Mona Vale skipped by Mrs L. Storey. Mrs L. Boles (Auckland), who came through the section play with five wins, was eliminated 29-7 by Mrs Z. White (Coronation, Nelson). Mrs Boles is a very prominent

skip in her own centre with many successes.
