The Welfare State

Sir,—ft la good to see that one economist really believes in the welfare State. Mr Danka's statement was very Interesting. In my childhood I read books of men losing their jobs, tramping the streets seeking work but finding none, selling tbeir furniture to buy food, going on too little food, to feed the children. Broken-hearted and starved they finally fall ill and die. No concern of the State, and no fault of the workmen. Surely a welfare State is a great advance on i the old type.—Yours, etc., B CI.ARION CALL l February 14, 1963. 1
