ANTARCTIC VOLCANO
Climbers Set Up Depot
(N.ZJ’.A.-Reuter—Copyright) CANBERRA, Feb. 14.
The six-man Australian expedition attempting the first ascent of the 9000-foot volcano Big Ben on Heard Island in the Antarctic have reached 4000 feet and established a depot there. Reporting this last night, the External Affairs Department said the climbers now were out of radio reach.
As well as scaling Big Ben, the party plans a week’s study of the geology and glaciology at about 8000 feet. Good progress has been made in scientific studies by the support party at Atlas Cove, where one scientist discovered two banded giant petrels, one of which was banded by him in 1951.
