Queen’s Lunch At Blenheim

The waitress who served the Queen at luncheon at the Criterion Hotel, Blenheim, also waited on the Queen Mother (then the Duchess of York) on her visit to Blenheim in 1927. She is Mrs Edna Stewart, who said the Queen chose cold salmon, cold turkey with salad, green peas and a little potato, strawberries and cream, followed by black coffee.

The Duke of Edinburgh selected crumbed butterfish from the menu, cold roast duckling with salad and vegetables. followed by cheese, biscuits and black coffee. During luncheon he had a glass of beer. The salmon served—a 10pounder—was caught in the Wairau river. For the Royal luncheon it was given pride of place on a silver tray, decorated with piped potatoes, garnished with parsley and lemon.
