Women’s Bowls Sixty-five Fours Qualify For Post-Section Play

Sixty-five fours have qualified for postsection play at the New Zealand women’s bowling tournament. There will now be seven rounds of post-section play, and it will not be . possible to end the tournament tomorrow, as had been hoped. At the end of Tuesday’s play there were 18 fours who had qualified with four wins, and the number was increased to 44 after the first game yesterday.

Mrs Joblin (South Brighton) entered yesterday’s play with two wins and had to win both games to qualify. She scraped home 20-19 against Mrs Derbidge (Opawa) in the first game. In the next her hopes seemed dashed when Mrs Oakley’s Woolston four were leading 14-7 well through the game. A sudden lapse by the Wooiston four on the next head let Mrs Joblin score seven to even the score. This put new life into the South Brighton combination and they held on to win 21-19.

The greatest surprise of the day was the elimination of Mrs Nicol (Mangakino), who, after having a 22-17 win in the first game over Mrs Sharpe (Reefton) was beaten 23-13 by Mrs Peterson (Hutt Central) in the last game.

Mrs Tricker, winner of the fours last year, is playing hard to retain her title. In her earlier games she recorded very good wins and yesterday was no exception. In the first game she beat Mrs Kissell (Sydenham) SO--19 and then went on to trounce Mrs G. McDonald (R.SA., Christchurch) 30-4. This gave her six wins in section play. Mrs Winstanley (Marewa) a partner of Mrs Nicol in her championship successes, entered post-section play with tour wins.

Mrs Edyvean (Richmond, Christchurch), who skipped the winning pair* at Dunedin in 1961 seemed to be playing much better in the fours than she was in the pairs and has qualified with five wins. Qualifiers Qualifiers are:—
