BOAT FOR JAPAN
A sample jet boat left New Zealand yesterday for Japan. A ready market is expected to develop after the boat is demonstrated and tested there. The boat, manufactured in Christchurch, is a 14ft fibreglass runabout powered by a six-cylinder marine engine. Jet boats, which are built under licence in 30 countries, are hot new to the East. Several were exported by the New Zealand Government to assist an irrigation project on the Mekong river, and they are used by the Hong Kong water police for harbour patrol
Japanese orders for jet boats will initially be filled from New Zealand, but if the market becomes large they may be manufactured there. In the United States and England thousands of the eraft were ordered before the sample boats were demonstrated.
