United State* officiate confirmed tonight that thro* American Potato* aubmenne* would be on station tn the Mediterranean early in April to replace Jupiter mtasiia* being withdrawn from northern Italy. Reports Aram Rom* eariier today said the Deputy Defence Secretary (Mr Rowwell Gilpatric) had told the Italian Defence Minister (Mr Gilto Andreotti) that th* submarines would be ta th* Mediterranean by April 1. Official* in Washington said they understood that April 1 was the target date and that V th* vessels would be on station within “a day or two” of that date. They emphasised that the three Potato* submarines would be under United State* and not N A TO, command. World Tear.—Dam* Edith Sitwell, th* 75-y*ar-old poet, will "get away" from th* English winter soon with a round-the-world voyage by way of Australia and New Zealand, the "Daily Express" said.—London.
