Bluff Short Of Watersiders
(N.Z. Press Association) INVERCARGILL, Feb. 14. Bluff was short of more than 300 watersiders when work began this morning and only one of the six vessels in port was fully manned. Three ships were seriously short of labour, one worked by a small gang from the ship, and the other was idle. “A ridiculous state of affairs which could conceivably go on forever.” was how the Waterfront Industry Commission’s manager (Mr B. Staply) described the situation this morning. On Monday and Tuesday there was no work for a number of union men and by the end of next week the position could be similar, he said. At present, however, the port could use twice as many, men as were available.
Only the wise possess ideas; the greater pant of mankind are possessed by them. — Samuel Taylor Coleridge.
