WOMAN FOR SENTENCE

Drunk Driver Hit Cyclist

(N.Z. Press Association)

WELLINGTON. Feb. 14. A jury in the Supreme Court at Wellington tonight found Margaret Gingles, aged 49, a grocery assistant, guilty on a charge of driving under the influence of liquor or drug causing bodily injury at Upper Hutt on August 11 last. She was remanded for sentence by Mr Justice McGregor. Medical evidence was given that Gingles smelt strongly of liquor and that her behaviour indicated consumption of “a fair quantity of alcohol."

Asked her name by the police she had replied: “Jingle Bells.” Gingles admitted to consuming only two nips of brandy and port. She said the accident occurred when she was trying to pass a cyclist “swaying all over the road.”
