Taxation

Sir,—Could you infanm me what a married couple would pay when, bath working, the man earns £BOO and the wife £7OO a year? What would the taxation be on a single man earning £BOO and a single woman earning £700? To my way of thinking, all parties should pay the same as the married ones pay at the single rate, but I have heard reports to the contrary. —Yours, etc., INTERESTED. February 12, 1963. [The District Commissioner of Taxes (Mr J. G. Mclntosh) said: “Disregarding any exemptions other than the personal exemption, tax payable by the man and the wife would be £lO9 4s and £B7 2s respectively. A single man and a single woman would be liable for the same amounts. This has been the position since the income year commencing on April 1, 1960. Before that date the aggregation provisions of the Land and Income Tax Act were applied to husband and wife.”]
