Award Came As Surprise

[From ZAUA THOMAS in London]

When Hardy Amies, one of the Royal couturiers, became consultant designer for Hepworths two years ago, he could scarcely haye imagined that one of the results of the merger would bring him one of America’s major international design awards for menswear.

The United States Commercial Counsellor presented Mr Amies with a golden eagle—the top award—in the CaswellMassey Awards for excellence of design in sportswear and accessories for men. Established in 1958 for recognition of creative ideas and trends in the men’s fashion industry, the award has gone to the Italians for the last four years.

Mr Amies originally included the outfit in a “Look into 1964” scene, but it was such an immediate success that it was decided to include it in this winter’s range—a decision which has brought a great fillip to him, to Hepworths and to British tailoring in general. The winning of this award is no mean accomplishment, as Mr Amies was competing against 1000 entries from nearly every country in the world, including Australia.
