HUTCHINSON EMPRESSES

First English Season

(HZ. Press

LONDON. February 12. The Australian jockey, R. Hutchinson, with 97 winners in his first full English season <1962) had eome into running as a likely outsider for the jockeys’ championships. the “Evening Standard’ racing writer said today. The 35-year-old Australian had gained a host of admirers last season.

"Whatever happens in 1963, it Is a widely-held view that he is virtually certain to go to the top within the next year or two.” he said.

Hutchinson had been quoted as a 100 to S chance for the 1963 title, compared with his fellow-Australian, S. Breasiey, 5 to 4 favourite, and L. Piggott, 6 to 4.

The "Evening Standard” writer said that Hutchinson had a fine sense of timing combined with a more powerful finish than most of his fellow Australians.

“Although Hutchinson gained valuable experience over the fashionable tracks In 1960 and 1961 when riding for P. Prendergast, to get within three of his century last season was remarkable in the circumstances. “Breaaley did not reach 100 winners until his fifth season over here and the champion readily admits that it took him a long time to master the finer points of race-riding on some of our more intricate courses like Epsom and Brighton.’’
