Women’s Bowls Eighteen Qualifiers So Far For Fours Title

The second day’s play in the New Zealand Women’s Bowling Association’s fours championship was held yesterday in brilliant sunshine. The greens were running fast and true, and on some of the greens excellent drawing was seen.

At the close of play yesterday 18 fours had come through the two days unbeaten, and are now assured of going forward to postsection play.

There are 40 fours with three wins. They will have to win one game today to go forward. One of the biggest surprises o* the day was the failure of Mis Nicol (Mangakino) in both her games. In the first she went down to Mrs Galbraith (Temuka) 24-12 and was then more heavily beaten in her next by Mrs Stretch (Waterlea) 28-10.

After being trounced 30-4 by Mrs Pope (Richmond, Nelson) Mrs Meffen (Mona Vale) beat the old campaigner and a six times title winner, Mrs Winstanley (Marewa) 19-14. This was Mrs Meffen’s first win in the , fours. Mrs Tricker (Lower Hutt), last year’s winner of the fours, was untroubled in her two games on Tuesday and won her first yesterday easily against Mrs Petrie (Rangiora) 25-13. In her second game she had to fight all the way to save defeat at the hands of Mrs Wills (St. Martins) and only managed to struggle home by one point, 21-20.' Mrs Edyvean (Richmond. Christchurch), who skipped the winning pair at Dunedin in 1961, has come through the two days without loss, having two good wins yesterday. 20-13 and 21-9. Of the 18 who have already qualified nine come from the Christchurch centre. The Mona Vale dub has two in Mesdames Rochvist and S-el-wood.

Those who have qualified are: Mesdames Davie (United, Nelson), Bowman (New Brighton). Soper (Springlands), Beal (Johnsonville), McDougall (Park.
