(N.Z. Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, Feb. 13. A long court hearing began at the New Plymouth Prison this afternoon when eight of 25 inmates appeared before two visiting justices of the peace in connexion with a series of disturbances at the prison on Monday and Tuesday. The hearing will continue tomorrow morning when the other 17 prisoners will be charged. Twenty-two would be charged with combining with others to change conditions in the institution and the other three with disorderly behaviour, the superintendent of the prison, Mr C. Hine, said tonight. Earlier in the day two prisoners with their hands handcuffed behind their backs, William Maurice Corcoran arid Basil Lawrence Moses, appeared before Mr A. W. Yortt, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court.

Corcoran was charged with assaulting Douglas Eaton Macdonald with intent to injure and with assaulting Donald Edward Radonich.

Moses was charged with assaulting Murray David Shearer.

Both elected trial by jury, and the Magistrate remanded them until February 21.
