FREEDOM OF PRESS

Subandrio On Dangers (N JSJ‘.A.-Reuter—Copyright) DJAKARTA, Feb. 11. Indonesia’s Foreign Minister (Dr. Subendrio) in a speech last night said the press of African and Asian countries should guard against exercising its right of freedom to the extent that it retarded national development. He was speaking at a reception held to mark the opening of the preliminary African and Asian journalists’ conference here. Delegates from 15 countries, including India and China, will later today begin their first working session of the scheduled week-long conference. In his speech tonight Dr. Subandrio said the African and Asian press should decide first of all that it was a tool of national struggles for independence, justice and peace. “Although we should develop our thoughts freely, we should guard against exercising that freedom of press that 'traps us into engaging in activities which can prolong the existence of the old hegemony. “By doing this, we will create a state of domination and humiliation for ourselves. “In doing this we will only stagnate or even kill our own national development,” Dr. Subandrio said.
