The prosecution had demanded life imprisonment for the 54-year-old former Prime Minister for having contributed about £ A 350 to a group of former officers and members of the minor political party Iju-Dang who were accused of attempting to overthrow General Chung Ke Park’s military Government last year. The Higher Court-martial today also sentenced to death Pyung Do Ahn, who was charged with being a leader of the attempted coup against the military Government A former military police lieutenant - colonel, Yong Hwan Lee, was sentenced to life imprisonment and nine other men were given prison terms, ranging from two and a half to 15 years.

Dr. Chang and the 11 other accused persons were found guilty of violating the military Government’s “special law for punishing special crimes.”

Under South Korean courtmartial law, the accused could appeal to the civilian Supreme Court after two trials by the military tribunal.
