Menzies On New Guinea

(N -Z J l . A .-Reuter—Coppright) CANBERRA, February 12. Suggestions that Australia would try to give the territories of Papua and New Guinea representative government by 1968 and complete its political independence by 1972 at the latest were mischievous, the Prime Minister (Mr Menzies) said yesterday. The Prime Minister said: “No other than the residents of the territory can tell us when to go. . . . The story about 1968 and 1972 is one which I had never heard ot until I read it today. "It is a mischievous story because it may well create confusion not only among indigenous inhabitants but also among Australians who live and work in the territory. I am quite unaware of any differences of opinion in the Government on this matter.”
