Rowing KARAPIRO REGATTA
More Entries Than Ever (N.Z. Prea* Association) AUCKLAND. Feb. 12. Never before have so many crews entered for the New Zealand rowing championships, which will be contested on Lake Karapiro from February 27 to March 3. Previously, the greatest number of crews entered at • national championship regatta was 233, that was at Karaplro in 1957. This year’s number has now climbed to 275. There are 31 crews in the maiden fours and 30 in the novice fours. AH championa are defending their titles in the senior events, and these Include all the oarsmen who so successfully represented New Zealand at the Empire Games in Perth. J. R. Hill, the Empire Games gold medallist, will have nine to contend with in the champion singles. In spite of rumour* of a break-up, the Oamaru four which also won the gold medal at Perth are defending the championship fours. There will be five crews in champion eights—they are Union of Wanganui, holders of the title, Waikato, Auckland, West End and Aramoho. The Watkinson brothers, who won a silver medial at Perth, will be defending their double sculls championship, and 16 crews have entered the champions pairs. Crews In the champion tours are Oamaru (2), Waikato (2), West End (2). Union of Wanganui (2). Auckland, Tlmaru. Gisborne, Waitemata, ClHton, Wellington, Nelson, and Kawhia.
