ADDINGTON MARKET Fat Cattle Cheaper, Fat Hoggets Dearer

With a much smaller fat sheep yarding, fat hogget values showed a definite rise at Addington Market yesterday. Fat ewes firmed a fraction, and wethers were about on a par. Fat lamb prices were little changed, in spite of a heavy entry. Fat cattle tended to lose some of last week’s gain in values with a bigger entry, and quality varied markedly. Heavy steers were 30s to 40s cheaper, with medium weights back by lOs to 20s, heifers eased by 10s to 20s, and cows were cheaper by about 20s.

FAT LAMBS The fat lamb entry showed a sharo increase to 2771 head, compared with 1*63 last week, but much of the entry was plain and light. Prime heavy lambs were keenly sought and values were on a per with those paid last week. Freezing company buyers gave valuable support to the market tor lighter weights and prices tor these showed little change. Best butchers’ lambs made made from M* Id to 86s Id, prime heavy lambs 56s Id to 57s Id, prime medium lambs 49s Id to 54s Id. light lambs 42s Id to 48s Id, and small and plain from 37s 7d. The entry totalled 2182 head, compared with 2832 last week and 4157 the week before. Hoggets generally showed an appreciation of 4s to 5s a head and in cases up to 7s on the heavier sorts and medium weights were also in demand. More than half the hogget entry made 60s or better. Quality varied considerably but there were some very good hoggets forward. A few more wethers were yarded this week but there were not many of top quality and this was reflected in the prices In the ewe market values tended to be slightly firmer but the appreciation was not as marked as in the hogget sale and the rise in values would probably be in the order of Is a head There were not as many early shorn ewes offered this week. The hogget market was topped by R. B. Powell (Brookside) with a pen at 70s Id and a sale at 69s Id was made by L. A. Catherwood (Charing Cross)’. Sales at 68s Id were made by R. FAT CATTLE Fat cattle values generally tended to be slightly cheaper with the increased entry which totalled 463 head, compared with 259 last week. Quality showed a big variation. In the heifer offering there was a good proportion of well finished handyweights which sold almost up to late rates but the plainer and heavier sorts were definitely cheaper.
