FARM TALKS IN ROME

Papers By N.Z. Scientists New Zealand scientists have been asked to prepare papers for presentation to a world conference on animal production which will be held in Rome in September. Reporting to the annual meeting of the New Zealand Society of Animal Production at Lincoln yesterday the president, Mr E. D. Andrews, said that Dr. C. P. McMeekan, formerly superintendent of the Ruakura animal research station, had been asked to preside over a conference debate on the necessity of defining needs and establishing priorities for the solution of animal production problems; Mr E. A. Clarke, of the Whatawhaita hill country research station, would prepare a short paper on limitations to efficiency imposed by inadequate nutrition, with particular reference to feed resources; the superintendent of the Ruakura animal research station, Dr. L. R. Wallace, would prepare a paper on the potential for increasing efficiency of feed utilisation through newer knowledge of animal nutrition, with particular reference to the milk production of dairy cattle; and Dr. A. Stewart, of Massey University College, would contribute a paper about improvement of animal production education. Mr Andrews said that the organising committee would meet in Rome before the conference to discus the possibility of creating a world body on animal production. A tentative suggestion was that if the 1963 conference was a success, the next would perhaps be in the United States and the third in the Pacific area.

Officers of the society were elected as follows:—President, Mr R. A. Barton (Massey University College); vicepresident, Mr J. W. Stichbury; secretary-treasurer, Mr H. J. Clifford; editor, Mr A. G. Campbell; management committee, Mr Andrews, and Dr. A. H. Carter, Dr. J. B. Hutton and Dr. A. T. Johns.
