BY-ELECTION CANDIDATES

Selection By National (NZ. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Feb. 12. The National Party has received three nominations from which it will select its candidate for the Otahuhu by-election. Two of these are believed to be Mr T. J. L. Tucker, who stood against the late Mr J. M. Deas at the 1960 General Election, and Mr R. J. Prestand, who stood unsuccessfully for the Auckland Central seat in 1960. Nominations for the National Party candidate closed this evening and a selection ballot will be held at Howick next Tuesday. Nominations for the Labour Party candidate will dose on February 20 and the selection will be made at a meeting of local and Wellington party members that night. The Social Credit Political League has not yet announced whether it will put forward a candidate. It is believed a decision will be made at a meeting of the league’s Dominion council cm Saturday. The returning officer, Mr R. C. Bartlett, said tonight that nominations for the byelection will close on February 22. The by-election will be held on March 16.
