FOOTPRINTS IN BUSH

Possible Line On Escapers (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Feb. 12. Half the 50 police engaged on the search for the two Auckland Prison escapers in the area west of the Firth of Thames were withdrawn today. The wanted men are George Wilder, aged 24, and Patrick Wiwarena, aged 25. The men’s services were required back in Auckland, the head of the Auckland ■police (Assistant Commissioner O. S. W. Power) said after he had conferred with search officials at Kaiaua today. Mr Power said the 50-strong Army contingent would remain on the search. “We can only speculate as to Wilder’s presence in the area, but we are satisfied Wiwarena has been here recently,” said Mr Power. “It is a matter of playing a waiting game.” With Army assistance, the remaining police are maintaining road blocks. The search control!'lnspector P. J. McKenzie, said that footprints had been found in the bush. A number of “exhibits” had also been found which might give a lead to the movements of the escapers.

He said the police would begin early tomorrow morning to search the area in which the tracks were found.
