Sheep On University Property

Sir, —Another fine animal has been shot for worrying sheep in the university paddocks at Riccarton, joining the long list of animals which have been killed here. Apart from the fact that the lessee of the paddocks used a firearm in a built-up area (one bullet has already -ntered a house), the temptation to a dog, which is always a potential killer, of having sheep in a town is not a fair thing for the dog. It has become unsafe for any dog-lover in the district to keep a dog. It is time the university gave up leasing this land for farming purposes, and went ahead developing the area for its ultimate use—the garden university of New Zealand.—Yours, etc.

RESIDENT. February 3, 1963. [The Registrar of the University of Canterbury (Mr G. G. Tu-bott) said: The grazing of land on the university site will gradually cease as the new university buildings are erected. A considerable area has recently been excluded from the grazing land to enable the science block to be erected and further land will be excluded when work commences on the student union building and the arte library complex")
