Marching CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING

Busy Week-end For Local Teams

Christchurch marching teams will have a busy time this week-end. The Christchurch Metropolitan Marching Association will hold its annual championships at the Templeton Domain on Saturday and Sunday, and also on Sunday the South Island senior marching championships will be held at the Caledonian Grounds, Timaru. Twenty-eight teams will compete in the metropolitan association’s championships on Saturday, but only 14 entries on Sunday. On Saturday, the senior A and B grades, the junior B grade, and the midget B grade will be judged.

The programme will begin with the costume judging on Saturday morning. A fall-in. an inspection and competition marching will be held in the afternoon. On Sunday, the programme will not begin until the afternoon. The Christchurch Fire Brigade Brass Band and the Christchurch Metropolitan Pipe Band will be in attendance. Fourteen teams will compete In the South Island championships at Timaru. The standard is expected to be very high, for some of the teams are to compete at the national contest at Wellington on March 9.

Judging will begin in the morning, and in the afternoon a march past and the official opening will be held. The president of the New Zealand Marching Association (Mr W. I. McKay), the Mayor of Timaru (Mr T. Thomson), Sir Basil Arthur, M.P.. and the president of the South Canterbury centre of the New Zealand Marching Association (Mr M. Harty) will attend the opening. The teams to compete are:— Philips Hi Z. Downings Red Robins. Gay Gordons (Canterbury), Redwings, Grosvenor Guards (Nelson). Legionaires of Otautau, Southemettes, Regalettes (Southland). Blair Atholl, Glencaim. Dunedin Highlanders (Otago), Commodores. Caroline Kilties, and Les Petits Gendarmes (South Canterbury).
