DEAD ANIMAL PROBLEM
By-Product Plants Close In Waikato (N.Z. Press Association) HAMILTON. January 31. A meeting was held in Hamilton yesterday to decide on action for the disposal of dead animals, the collection of which will cease when animal by-product operators go out of business. One Waikato firm recently closed and others have announced their intention to do so because of increasing costs and lower prices for hides and tallow.
The meeting was chaired by its organiser, Mr M. G. Hewitt, of Federated Fanners.
The meeting unanimously agreed that, in the interest of health and the control of stock diseases, an immediate solution must be found.
Some local operators have agreed to continue the collection of dead animals until some conclusion has been reached in negotiations over recommended actions in Wellington.
It has been calculated that about 20.000 dead animals are collected each year in the Waikato area. These are estimated to produce 560 tons of meatmeal a year.
