McCool And Certainly

Sprint Fast

McCool and Certainly, both acceptors for Ashburton, made fast time in solo sprints in the hands of the light-weight, N. Eastwood, at Riccarton yesterday.

Apache also showed much ability for a novice in another brilliant solo sprint, one that could have been a winning trial for Ashburton.

McCool sprinted six furlongs on the plough in Imin 14 4-ssec. He wu quickly up to high speed, running the opening two in 25 l-ssec and the three in 37 l-ssec. He will not be as wellseasoned as most of his rivals in the Tinwald Handicap at Ashburton, but this gallop should have done no end of good. Certainly galloped half a mile in 50 l-ssec wide out on the course proper. Certainly sprinted towards end of the training. Earlier trialists had done well to betta, 52sec. The Certainly-N. Eastwood light-weight combination might be a stumbUng block for the best of the others in the sprint at Ashburton. SMABT RUN Apache was one of the last to gallop. With the stable apprentice A. Reriti up, this three-year-old reeled off half a mile in 48sec, the final three furlongs in 35 4-ssec, and the

task did not seem to place any great strain on him. Apache i> R. J. Skelton’s mount at Ashburton and doubtless it will be a popular combination, though a wide barrier draw might aet many backers against them. Several other prominent Riccarton-trained candidates for Ashburton were not at full strength in their gallops. Picright was allowed to loaf over half a mile in 56sec. “He doesn’t need much, and he had a good gallop on Tuesday,” said his trainer, A. J. Williams. Forsythe shaped well, and Compensate was disappointing, in a four-horse trial on the outside of the course proper. Forsythe, with N. Eastwood (R/, ran nine furlongs in 2min 1 3-ssec, and won the trial by half a length from Barwood (Collins), which joined in for the last six furlongs. Bodkin (Donovan) and Compensate (T. Wilson) started with Forsythe, bat

soon dropped far behind and struggled home separated by two lengths, with Compensate at the back.

Forsythe ran the last halfmile in 53 4-ssec.

Earlier, Count Pedro (N. Eastwood) ran nine furlongs in 2min 4 3-ssec. He was joined for the last six furlongs by French Leave (W. Humphries) and they sprinted the final four in 52 2-ssec.
