TRAINEES FOR CAMPS

338 To Go From

Canterbury

The number of youths from the Christchurch district (between the Conway and Rakaia rivers) who will carry out national military training this year is 338. Those called by ballot held in Wellington yesterday number 277. Fortyeight youths volunteered for service. Giving the figures yesterday, the district superintendent of the Labour Department (Mr C. P Collins) said that at least 250 youths liable for training had failed to register. Total registrations for this district were 1674. “An appreciable number of the youths who have not registered will be required to go into camp. The percentage of Maori youths who registered is unduly low,” Mr Collins said.

Departmental inspectors have been instructed to make sure that 20-year-old youths in the premises the inspectors visit have carried out their military training obligations. Proceedings would probably be taken against offending employees and employers. National training figures for the Christehurch district, with the figures for the previous registration period in parenthesis, are: called by ballot, 277 (289); volunteers 48 (63); late registrants from the 1961 group (13) (0); total Maori registrations, 27; total liable for service 338 (342).
