TEST ENDS IN DRAW
England Needed 133 To Win (SZ. Prwt Assoctattoa—CbpvripM) ADELAIDE, January 30. The fourth test ended in a tame draw today. K. F. Barrington played a hero’s part with an unbeaten 132 to pull England through a critical stage of its second innings and England finished with 223 for four —133 runs short of a victory they had little hope of achieving in the time granted them.
Australia was dismissed for a second timings 253 right on the luncheon adjournment England began disastrously after lunch with G. Pullar dismissed for three and D. S. Shepherd for one.
Australia’s hopes of forcing victory soared with the double dismissal. Then came K. Barrington, cool and forceful.
His first partner, M. C. Cowdrey, was run out for 32 and his successor, E. R. Dexter, caught at slip for 10 by R. Simpson.
Along came T. W. Graveney and the pair batted out the day.
Graveney took a bruising blow from G. McKenzie on his left elbow, but after a hold-up he gamely continued.
Shepherd, an overnight casualty suffering from pharyngitis, was fit enough to bat today and R. Illingworth, a more serious victim of the same ailment, arrived late in the afternoon ready to bat in an emergency. It was Barrington's first
test century against Australia. His 132 included 16 boundaries and two sixes in 227 minutes of stubborn defiant batting. He did not give a single chance. The Australian side obviously missed A. K. Davidson and the attack looked threadbare in the later stages as Barrington took toll of the bowling. The Sydney test next month will decide the rubber and the Ashes.
