(NX Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, Jan. 19.
A £12,006 steel barge will be launched on the Waitemata harbour tomorrow on the first stage of a trip expected to end at Port Taranaki late on Tuesday. The barge has been constructed at Auckland for the Taranaki Harbour Board and wiß be used initially for site investigation work under the board’s development plans. When it is launched tomorrow, the barge win be complete with a deckhouse and winches and ready for foe delivery voyage of more than 500 miles.
According to the delivery contractor, Mr H. L Julian, at Auckland, the big tug Otapiri will not begin the tow until late on Friday and the trip is expected to take nearly four days. He said the lines of the *Oft by 26ft barge, which had a depth of 6ft, were not conducive to a high-epeed tow. It was hoped the tow would be at six knots, but this would depend on the weather. The tug will have a sixman crew, but no-one will be aboard the barge. The tug has a speed of 12 knots, and will make the return trip to Auckland in two days.
