SYDNEY, January 29.
Experts warned today that the shank which fatally mauled the Sydney actress, Miss Marcia Hathaway, yesterday, probably would remain in the area and attack again if given the chance. Mias Hathaway, aged 32, died after a shark almost severed her right leg in 3ft of water at Middle harbour.
Dr. V. M. Copplesoo, who has carried out research on shark attacks for several years, said: “Another attack can be. expected within 14 days if people are not careful or if the shark is not killed.”
Dr. Coppleaon said sharks were believed to attack people only when toe sea temperatures rose above 68 degrees.
The secretary of the Shark Research Society, Mr N. Gorshenin, said the shark, having tasted human blood, would probably stay where it was and attack again. “It may have domiciled itself in the area and regards everything else as an intruder,” Mr Gorshenin said.
“Every effort should be made to catch the shark.’*
Mias Hathaway toured New Zealand with the British
Commonwealth Theatre, appearing in ’Twelfth Night” and Bernard Shaiw’s “The Devil’s Disciple.”
