Revival In Canterbury

The great public interest shown in the polo games at the 1962 Christchurch show led to the revival of the sport in Canterbury. Afterwards a group of interested persons met and decided to try to form clubs in North and Mid-Canterbury. In North Canterbury a meeting was called by Mr N. C. Mahon and a dub wes formed under the patronage of two former New Zealand representatives, Messrs R. M. D. Johnson and D. W. J. Gould. The Mid-Canter-bury dub was formed at a meeting called by Mr W. Lemon. The lack of gear has been a great handicap to both clubs. However, the North Canterbury club held a successful opening day on Saturday which was attended by a large crowd and the dub decided to meet regularly every third Sunday. The Mid-Canterbury Club is due to hold a similar opening day very soon. With the enthusiasm of the new players and the promise shown by some of them the future looks bright for Canterbury polo. However, a lot of hard work training ponies and practise* lies ahead.
