ADDINGTON MARKET Bigger Entries Of Fat Sheep And Lambs

Although there was a much larger entry of fat sheep at Addington market yesterday values were fairly well maintained. Hoggets were from par to easier, older wethert were cheeper and ewes maintained late rates. Fat lambs were also yarded in much larger numbers and while there was a sustained demand for all classes and a satisfactory sale values declined about 2s to 2s 6d a head from last week’s good rates. There was a slightly smaller yarding of fat cattle and it contained a rather higher proportion of cattle unsuitable for the requirements of the trade. Cows were easier but steers and heifers held to about late rates.

FAX LAMBS Th* lamb market wm two time* and a half the size of last week with a yarding of 2150 compared with 860. Quality was about average with a fair reprssentation of medium to light-weight lambs and only a tyrinkling of top quality. There was again a strong demand for all classes, with freezing interests well represented in the buying gallery, but after last week's buoyant sale when values jumped by 3s to U i head prices yesterday were generally M to 2s fid easier. The selection Included a few shorn lambs and making up to about 45s Id these sold particularly well and looked dearer than comparable woolly lambs. However, the weight of numbers tended to tell towards the close of the market when values eased and sales were harder to make. Hoggets sold from on a par with late rates to slightly easier over the main part of the sale, but were sharply slacker in the concluding stages. Best quality wethers sold reasonably well, but older wethers eased by up to 3s to 4s a head. A fairly large entry of ewes met a satisfactory sale at about last week’s rates. Grazier competition for ewes with teeth was noticeable. Hoggets sold up to 64s Id for 10 heavily woolled Romneys of exceptional quality from D. C. Gould (Upper Riccarton). V. W.
