Early Morning Arrest

After being at liberty for 10 days Edward Murray Moore, aged 23, who escaped from Addington Prison, was recaptured at 5 ajn. yesterday as he was walking down Fitz-

gerald avenue on crutches. He was seen by constables in a patrol car. The paitrol car drove past Moore, who was wearing a slouch halt. One of the constables remarked that it was eairiy for an injured man to be up and the car was tamed around.

When the paitrol car came back Moore discarded his crutches and jumped over a fence. The police ran after him and Moore, who was handicapped by an injured foot, was soon apprehended. He offered no resistance. Constables K. Gallagher and D. Stapley and two others were in the group which made the arrest.

Two men surprised Moore in an unoccupied house at Sumner late o < Monday afternoon. They gave chase and caught him but Moore persuaded them to let him go. It .is thought Moore injured an ankle when he jumped out of a window of the house.

Court Appearance

Charges of unlawfully converting a bicycle, valued ait £C, the property of a person unknown on January 28 and burglary of a tobacconist shop ait 123 Ferry road early yesterday morning were preferred against Moore when he appeared before Mr E. A. Lee. S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday. He was also charged with escaping from lawful custody ait Addington Prison on January 19. No plea was taken on any of the charges and on the application of Sargeant B. D. Read the accused was remanded in custody until February 4. Counsel for the accused, Mr R. G. Blunt, said he had no application to make.

Moore, off crutches, was handcuffed to Detective. Sergeant E. T. Mitten in the dock. He wore an opennecked green shirt, a twotome fawn and brown cardigan and dark trousers. After leaving the dock Moore was taken away in a police vehicle,
