Major Points To Auckland

(From Our Own Reporter) AUCKLAND, Jan. 29. After dawdling along for two and a half days, the Auck-land-Canterbury Plunket Shield match ended in a flurry of runs and wickets before it was eventually drawn, with first innings points to Auckland, at Eden Park today. The reason for the last rush was that G. T Dowling, the Canterbury skipper, had made an excellent declaration which required Auckland to score 184 in 185 minutes for victory. Auckland started quickly, slowed in the middle, and rushed away again at the end, but could score only 167 for seven wickets before time ran out.

Auckland scored 218 and 167 for seven, and Canterbury 170 and 231 for nine wickets declared

Canterbury received an early set-back when it started play today at 111 for three wickets. K Thomson had not improved on his overnight score of six before he was brilliantly caught by W R Playle at silly mid-on This wicket fell at 116, and when D L. Gallop was out at 134 and J. T Ward at 154 it seemed as if Auckland would have an easy task. All this time B F Hastings was going steadily, but the tight bowling kept him in eheck and there were few 'oose bau« from J T Sparling or the quicker men for him to attack He lost J Ruston at seven for 166 and then was yorked himself at 172 after batting 236 minutes for his TO.

Any thought of a complete break-throu eh was immediately removed by some elever batting bv R. C. Motz and 3. W Kiddey Motz’s crashing drives and pulls were hit with all his old power and three times in one over he hit Snarling, the moat successful of the bowlers, for fours. Together they took the score from 172 to 217 before Motz was eaught off the new ball and Kiddey had time for a few more bold hits before Bowline closed the innings For the third time this season Sparline took five wickets without claiming the extra one needed for Ms name to be placed on the honours board He bawled well with Ms variations of fllirtit and speed, and althooeh the pitch helped his sain, he seemed to be turning the ban more than tn the oast The faster bowlers. R S Cunts and Sutton, were steady but the pitch was of Httle help to thtm Auckland began tto chase for runs briskly, with S. G. Gedye again being In good touch with

his placements to leg. He had scored 33 of the 52 in even time when early in Gallop’s long spell he touched a catch to Ward. In the face of accurate bowling from Gallop and Kiddey the Auckland chase slowed to a dawdle after afternoon tea and the second 50 took 73 minutes. Playle. after taking 65 minutes for 19. started the race again with a four and a six to long off from Kiddey. Then Kiddey slowed them down again by trapping Playle. Motz bowled J. T. Sparling

one run later, and then J. G. Kemp went to Kiddey, with the score slumping from 120 for three to 126 for five.

P. P. W. Morris, driving with great power, and R. W Morgan, took the score to 156 for six with 15 minutes left, but Morgan’s dismissal, and then Mclntyre’s in the same over, shook Auckland. Dowling himself had the last over, when 22 runs were needed, but by then a draw was inevitable. Scores:— CANTERBURY First innings .. ..170 Second Innings G. T. Dowling, run out .. 0 B. A.
