Tourist Industry

Three good reasons why New Zealand should welcome the explosive growth of the world's tourist industry and should try to share more fully in this great social phenomenon of the twentieth century were given by Lord Mabane, president of the British Travel Association, in his brief address in Christchurch. Visitors who come to a country on holiday make a valuable contribution to its economy, and citizens who travel from it are ambassadors and salesmen for their land and its products. And both groups

make an incalculable contribution to international understanding. For these reasons all enlightened countries must encourage something that serves very much more than the pleas-

ure of individuals. The importance that Britain attaches to the tourist industry was shown by Lord Mabane’s visit. And during his short stay here he must also have encouraged official interest in the prospects that have been opened for the New Zealand tourist industry by the speed, comfort, and relative economy of modern travel.
