Croquet NORTH ISLAND SUCCESS
Tournament With Australians (N.Z. Press Association)
WANGANUI, January 38. The North Island croquet team made a good start to its three-day contest against the Australians at Wanganui today, winning the first of the doubles matches to be completed. The North Island pair, J. Prince and Mrs L. M. Hight, defeated Mrs C. H. Cathcart and Mrs G. Rumbelow, 26-14. 36-2.
Mrs H. Purdy and T. Regan (North Island) won a very closely fought first game, 26-25, against Mr M. Harrison and Mrs H. Day. In the second game the Australians ran away to win 26-0. The third game was still being contested when play ended today. The other North Island pair, Mrs R. H. Browne and R. Browne. jun„ won their first game, 36-15, against L. Mason and Mrs E. Rudder. The Australians turned the tables in the second game, 26-17. The deciding game will be played tomorrow morning.
Skating Record. Yevgeni Grishin, the Soviet world record holder, Mt a new record for the 500-metre speed skating event near Alma-ata yesterday. Grishin’s time was 39.65ec. He was competing in an international competition.—Moscow, January 18.
