BIGAMY CHARGE
Loren, Ponti For Trial
(N ,ZJ‘.A.-Reuter—Copyright)
ROME, Jan. 25.
The film actrdss, Sophia Loren, and the film producer, Dr. Carlo Ponti, will be tried in Rome on March 21 for alleged bigamy, a Court official said today. In June last year, an investigating magistrate ordered Dr. Ponti to stand trial for bigamy and Miss Loren for complicity.
They were married by proxy in Mexico in 1957. After they had been committed for trial, a Mexican Court ruled last September that their marriage was null and void. Dr. Ponti had obtained a Mexican divorce from his Italian wife, Giuliana Fiastri, whom he married in 1946. Under Italian law, this marriage is still valid. There is no divorce in Italy. Italian press reports said the defence lawyers were likely to ask for adjournment of the case, pending a decision by an Italian Court on a request to have the Mexican annulment confirmed in Italy. If the annulment were declared effective in Italy, the charge of bigamy would lapse.
Body Net Found.—The body of Lindsay Alan Waters, aged 17, who disappeared while bathing at North Beach on Sunday afternoon, had not been found at a late hour yesterday. Searches were made throughout the day.
