Corporation Cut 4m. Roses A Year

AUCKLAND. Jan. 28.

A former president of a corporation which annually sent four million cut roses to cities in America was a passenger in the liner Mariposa t day.

He is Mr A. S. Nash, of northern New Jersey, who is paying a short visit to New Zealand, accompanied by his wife. "The whole ot the commercial rose industry in the eastern parts of the United States has changed tremendously in recent years.” he eaid. “The development of residential and commercial areas has forced up the taxation of land and costa of production to such a degree thait growers have been forced to give upBecauae of toe high Hosts there has been a decline in toe popularity of roses," Mr Nash said.

established in 1924. The glasshouses cover 150.000 sq. ft. and 110.000 rose bushes were grown in raised beds. The natural blooms, however, quite apart from rising costa, have met with severe competition from other newer types of flowers and also the artificial product which is lifelike and does not fade. Artificial flowers are big sellers, according to Mr Nash.

Mr Nash has now given up the rose growing business and the entire nurseries have been pulled down.

Repairs to Aircraft—The Super Constellation of the United States Navy which was forced to turn back to Christchurch on Sunday evening with engine trouble, is at present under repair, ft is hoped to have the aircraft ready for another attempt to fly to McMurdo Sound at 9 pm. tomorrow.
