Shark Kills Woman

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) SYDNEY, January 28.

A 32-year-old woman was fatally savaged by a shark in Sydney’s middle harbour today while her fiance tried frantically to rescue her. The woman, a Sydney actress, Miss Marcia Hathaway, had been with her fiance, a Sydney journalist, Fred Knight, aged 38, in water 3ft deep when the shark attacked in a flurry of mud.

There was no warning. When Miss Haithaway screamed, Knight flung himself on the shark which first seized her lower leg. He forced it to let go, but it lunged again, bit high on Miss Hathaway’s right thigh which was almost severed by the time she was wrenched free.
