An American union leader last night forecast turmoil within the United States if plans were not made to place workers in jobs in spite of the challenge of automation “This country may have a real upheaval, a real turmoil,’’ the leader of the Transport Workers’ Union. Mr Michael Quill, said in a television interview, the Associated Press reported. He said the labour struggle ot the depression years was “easy going” compared with what the United States could face in the future.
“If the people of America are not put to work, we may be facing real trouble from within," he said.
Mr Quill said the workers of the 1960’s "are not like we were in the thirties. “They are men and women with the automobiles unpaid for with the television sets unpaid for, with the hi-fi unpaid for. with other gadgets unpaid for,” he added. He said the turmoil would come “not from Russia, not from Cuba, not from China, not from the Iron Curtain countries, but from its own people within the United States.”
