A 20-year-ald negra architectural student, Harvey Gantt, will enrol at Clemson College today—the lint negro to be accepted at any allwhite State college in South Carolina. Police and State troopers were clustered around the university campus prepared to deal with any incidents at the enrolment, but little or no trouble was expected Mr Gantt’s admission to Clemson ocr.es after a long legal battle and a Federal Court ruling that he be admitted. The student’s lawyer, Mr Matthew Perry, said last n.ght that Mr Gantt was not "worried at all’’ about his forthcoming experience. ‘‘He's a cool young man, the calmest of us all,” said Mr Perry. Leaders from religion, business and education ranks have appealed for law and order during the integration of Clemson Governor Donald S. Russell, while calling the Federal ruling admitting Gantt "distasteful.” said the problem would be met and solved "without violence . . . without disorder.” The negro student spent yesterday quietly packing in his home at Charleston. He told reporters that he had not received any threa'eraiag telephone calls or letters. Mr James Meredith, the negro student who broke the racial barrier at the University of Mississippi amid widespread rioting last year, made an appearance yesterday a.t a negro rally in Jackson. Mississippi. He did not say whether he planned to return to the university next term. A local leader of the National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People announced at the meeting that several other negroes planned to enrol at the university in September.
