BASES IN SPAIN
Call For Talks (NJZJ>.A.-Reuter— Copyright) MADRID. January 26. The. Spanish Government last night called for negotiations to revise the defence agreements giving the United States use of bases on Spanish territory. An announcement from the Information Ministry said Spain would ask for a revision of military, economic and political treaties. The agreements between Spain and the United States were signed in September, 1953. They are valid for 10 years and are to be renewed automatically for five more years unless one of the signatories asks for a revision. The United States has three strategic air bases —at Moron de la Frontera, near Seville, Torrejon, near Madrid, and Saragossa—a naval base at Rota, and two “stand-by” naval supply depots at Ferrol and Cartagena.
First hint that Spain wished to revise the agreements was given by General Franco in October, 1961, when he said in a speech at Burgos that they “need to be studied and renovated.” The State Department said in Washington yesterday there had been “preliminary informal discussions” between officials on exitending the 1953 defence agreement.
