POLARIS SUBS
Mediterranean Patrol Soon?
(NX Press Assn.—Copyright) WASHINGTON, Jan. 27
The first United States Polaris submarine may be sent into the Mediterranean on patrol this year, perhaps as the first vessel of a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation nuclear force. United States officials believe it is imperative there be no long gap between the withdrawal of Jupiter landbased missiles from Turkey and Italy and the appearance of the first of the missilefiring submarines which are to replace the Jupiters. The United States now has nine Polaris submarines committed to patrol in the North Atlantic within striking range of Soviet targets. By the end of the year, the United States Ijlaris fleet will be 18, according to the Associated Press.
Preparations are under way to start Polaris patrols in the Pacific. A movement into the Mediterranean need not delay this.
