BOWLS Big Surprise By New Brighton

One of the biggest surprises in Christchurch Bowling Centre history occurred on Saturday in the Three : Fours competition when New Brighton came from fifth place to win the competition by one point from United, which was fourth before play began on Saturday. It appeared as if either Christchurch, with 28 points, or Shirley, with 27} points, would take the title, although Sydenham, with 26} points, also had a chance. Christchurch failed to score a point against Linwood, and Shirley met a similar fate against St Albans. Sydenham could only muster up one point against Beckenham. United, with a four-point win against Canterbury, took its figures to 30 points, but New Brighton brought off a last-minute dash to take a possible six off Morrison Avenue to bring its points to 31. There was no change in the first three placings after the final round of the Manning Cup series. Before play began, Fendalton led Christchurch by four points, with Cashmere 7.1 points further back. For Cashmere, which finished second last year, to ' win the competition the two leading teams would have to :have slumped badly. Fendalton was determined not to lose the lead and of ; the eight games played it won seven to bring its points to 172. Christchurch won three of the four games played and took its points to 161. Cashmere also had a successful day and won six of its seven games, but could not improve its position on the ladder and so retained third place. Linwood was in a very happy position in the Robinson Shield with a lead of 6 points over Barrington before play began and, like Fendalton, was determined not to let the competition slip from its grasp.
