LIVED ON BEER THREE WEEKS
Unemployed Man Remanded
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Jan. 27.
A man who walked into Taranaki street police station on Friday night said he had been living on beer tor three weeks and wanted to go to gaol to dry out. In the Magistrate’s Court today, Phyllip Marsh Baylis, aged 43, a workman, was charged with being an idle and disorderly person in that he had insufficient lawful means of support. He pleaded guilty.
Sergeant R. A. Knight said that Baylis, who bad only 9d in his possession, told the police he had been out of work for three weeks and had been sleeping under hedges when he could not
get a free bed. Sergeant Knight said that, at the time of his arrest. Baylis had been drinking but was not drunk. He had previously appeared before the Court.
Baylis told the Magistrate (Mr X B. Thomson, S.M.), “Tm a hard worker. I walked miles and miles to get a job but was unable to get one and got sick of trying."
The Magistrate remanded Baylis until Monday when a Salvation Army officer could re consulted.
