Rosalind Globe Takes Main Race At Hororata

Rosalind Globe beat Flying Blue handily and 16 others very easily over two miles in the Hororata Handicap, the principal race and first leg of the double, at the Hororata Trotting Club’s annual meeting on Saturday.

Rosalind Globe came to the front on the home turn. She was headed for a stride or two in the last furlong by Flying Blue but responded gamely and determinedly to a hard drive and was going away by a length at the finish. The best of the others was the each-way favourite, Maudella, but she was third in a gap of five lengths.

There had been no indication that stamina was one of Rosalind Globe’s stronger qualities in any of her four previous attempts as a two miler this season. Her only show of form at all in her 14 previous starts had been a last-start fourth among sprinters at Washdyke a week earlier.

That form apparently did not influence betters greatly, for Rosalind Globe was at generous odds in the Hororata Handicap. She was the 7/6 favourite of 18 and paid £l7 10s 6d and £4 Ils for a win-and-place. In a total doubles pool amounting to £15,227 10s, she carried 1360 10s tickets, 5963 less than the popular fancy, Maudella. Rosalind Globe is an aged mare by Johnny Globe from Shadow Rose, trained at Ashburton •by A. C. Amyes for Mr A. H. and Mrs A. W. Soal. She was the first of two trivn-ing-driving successes for ’ Amyes at the meeting. The> other was Disperse, which he races himself. She won the second division of the A. J. Harris Memorial Handicap. The smart three-year-old Admiral, which R. Young trains at Halswell for Mr H. J. Smith, recorded his second win for the season when he outclassed his rivals in the O. J. Watson Challenge Stakes, the second leg of the double. For a last-start form runner, Admiral was at surprisingly good odds. He was the 5/5 favourite for a win-and-place and fourth fancy with doubles betters. He paid £7 4s and £2 Ils 6d and with Rosalind Globe his return was £l7l 4s 6d for £l. This was shared by the holders of 294 5s tickets. The meeting was held In fine weather and the track was fast. There was a good attendance. On - Course investments amounted to £28,983 1 os, including £3245 10s on the double. compared with £26,785 10s for the corresponding meeting last year. Game Finish Rosalind Globe showed stamina and gameness to win the Hororata Handicap for which she was the 7/6 favourite of 18. A. C. Amyes had Rosalind Globe in touch with the pace all the way. She improved from the trailing position to lead on the home turn, lost the lead to Flying Blue inside the last furlong, but responded gamely on the tnside to a hard drive and got up to win by half a length. Flying Blue was left without a trail tn the early part of the race but D. G. Jones managed to tuck him tn behind Rosalind Globe six furlongs out. He ranged up to the leader as they straightened for the run home, inched ahead inside the furlong but tired a little closer to home.

The each-way favourite, Maudelta. was third in a gap of five lengths. She was slow to get under way. then had to make a big run three wide from the tail of the field in the last six furlongs. Sunhappy. another fairly handy from the start, was two lengths back fourth. She beat Hanoove which ruined his chance by breaking at the end of half a mile, by a length and a half. King Clovis, which had

his chance, was a close sixth. Next were Thunderbolt. Lady Charles, Black Treasurer and the trotter Control, which went a grand race from the 60 yard mark.

Napoleon Hanover broke at the end of half a mile and was pulled up. Lady Charles also struck bother at this point. Winabob was pulled up after breaking badly at the start. The other bad beginner was Yakety Yak.

Easy For Admiral

Admiral came right up to expectations in the O. J. Watson Challenge Stakes which he won running away by a length and a half from Solemn.

R. Young got Admiral into his stride much quicker than usual and he had him sharing the fourth line on the home turn. Mr H. J. Smith’s Stormyway colt set out after the co-

leaders. Cappi and Solemn, as they ran to the straight and he rushed past Solemn into a clear lead half a furlong out.

Solemn tried to run in front for the last six and a half furlongs and her stablemate, Maggie Spangler, which finished third three-quarters of a length back, ran in the line behind Admiral till the straight. Maggie Spangler lasted for her placing by half a head from the win favourite, Gay Robin, which had his chance but was running on just the same.

Cappl was a weakening fifth in a long gap and the majority of the others in the race arrived home at little more than a walk. Field Chief was sixth and he was followed in by Siva, Flynn. Mystery Jim and Messala.

Messala. Lord Cecil, Vaggt Yale, Gay Gordon and Dawn Hanover all lost their chance at the start.
