Kingsdown Patch Has Overdue Win

(From Our Own Reporter)

DUKEDIN, January 27.

Kingsdown Patch made an overdue return to winning form when he held off the fastfinishing Avante in the Electric Handicap at Forbury Park on Saturday. The My Chief six-year-old had not won a race for some time and he was the ninth favourite in a field of 14.

M. Holmes sent Kingsdown Patch to the front with nine furlongs and a half left and set a fairly leisurely pace. He turned for home ahead of Gold Globe, Highland Step, which was feeling the strain, Avante, which was badly pocketed. Van Rebeck. Robin Dundee, Storm-light and Doctor Dan. Kingsdown Patch had to be driven out to hold on to a slender lead of a head at the post. Avante had to be pulled back a shade to work clear of the rails and challenge. He finished in grand style and might have been a little unlucky. Gold Globe, which received a good run close to the lead all the way, fought on for third a Length back, with Van Rebeck making ground for a close fourth just ahead of Robin Dundee, which showed speed. Stormlight made ground for sixth, ahead of Doctor Dan, which was pushed back early, Rustic Lad and Highland Step. Garrison Royal Notify, which checked Massacre badly, Autumn Folly and Fox Able lost ground early. Narrow Win The Greymouth-owned and trained Free Return overcame an early break to gain a narrow win over Doctor Kyle in the Otago Handicap. Free Return lost at least 24 yards when he broke, but he soon improved again and was sixth with five furlongs left Doctor Kyle took the lead at the mile post and he shaded Tarseal racing to the straight. Flying Paddy was next on the inside of Harbour Light. Oakleigh Lad and Harbour Light dead-heated for third a nose in front of the galloping Tarseal, then there was a gap to Tony’s Pride and Flying Paddy, which were well beaten. From Back Mark Cairnbrae the backniarker. on 48 yards gave a dashing display to win the Stewards’ Handicap. C. S. Donald took advantage of the moderate pace ot improve with Cairnbrae at the end of half a mile, and he moved up to third on the outside of Moose just after Rembrandt took control with 10 furlongs and a half left. Rembrandt and Cairnbrae led Moose to the straight, with Caiumite, Cushie Doo. Winona. Van Rush. Dark Louise and Young Kim handy. Caimbrae had a keen struggle with Rembrandt inside the furlong. but had his measure 50 yards out and beat him by half a length. Moose was only a head away in third place. She looked desperately unlucky as

she was late working clear of a pocket on the rails. Dark Louise, now a member of W. R. Butt’s team, paced a sound race for fourth ahead of Winona, which made up a lot of ground after breaking. Carver Doon made up ground for sixth, just ahead of Great Credit, which was pushed back to the tail of the field near the three furlongs. Lauder Scott, Van Rush, Carver Doon and Winona gave ground at the start. Consistent Runs Trade Fair followed up some consistent racing for places when he outsped his rivals in the Twilight Handicap. W. R. Butt got Trade Fair away splendidly and he was fifth when the field settled down. Faru forced the pace from Lakeda. which was on the outside of Vanese, with Storm Water next on the inner. Vanese moved out and joined Faru in the lead racing to the straight, with Trade Fair next on the outside of Storm Water. The others were struggling to keep up. Trade Fair took the measure of Vanese early in the run home and drew out to beat her by more than two lengths. Storm Water came home solidly for third, a length behind his stablemate. Lilt made up a little ground for fourth, ahead of the tiring Faru. Deft, which was slow away and covered a lot of extra ground, was far from disgraced in sixth place, ahead of Loyal Brigade and Inglemead. both of which made uo ground. Sirrah. W’hich checked Inglemead, Loyal Brigade and Deft, lost ground early. First Win Filet Mignon gained a decisive first won w'hen she beat Sirretta in the Summer Handicap, whifch was roughly run. D Mangos had Filet Mignon, a firm favourite, in the first four throughout. She joined the pacemaker Dorothy Jean, racing to the straight. Filet Mignon was soon a clear leader and she ran on strongly to win by a length and a half from Sirretta, which was handv enough all the way. Dorothy Jean, a likely improver, fought back gamely when headed and took third place a length and a half behind Sirretta and a length in front of Charlton Lady. Hal's Delight was a fair fifth, ahead of Loyal Trick, St. Nazaire and Mains Lady. Aufleem was checked after being slow away while Loyal Trick. Hughle Tryax, Mains Lady and Bonvar lost ground. Rebel, after being handv al) the W’ay. ran out an easy ‘winner in the Vauxhall Handicap. The Free Fight gelding won with something in hand by a length and a half from Medi-

eval, which broke three times, but lost little ground each time. Dubbo was a useful third well clear of Oakleigh Lad. which produced little dash. Snap On was beaten off fifth.
