Maori Girl’s Bouquet

A Maori child, Te Puea Padkea, daughter of Mr Tapihana Paikea, former member of Parliament for Northern Maori who died this month, will present a bouquet to the Queen on February 6. Te Puea will present the flowers during Waitangi Day ceremonies in the evening. She is named after a princess of the Ngaruawahiabased Maori royal family who died some years ago. The Maori Affairs Department estimates that 5000 Maoris will attend the celebrations, which mark the one hundred and twentythird anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi. Three sticks to be laid at the Queen's feet in the challenge ceremony have been elaborately carved by Mr John Taiapa, of Rotorua. Fire Safety At Waitangi (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, January 25. When the Royal yacht Britannia anchors at Waitangi, the staff and equipment of the fire-fighting unit there will have been almost doubled. The senior ranger of the service at Auckland (Mr W. R Pedder) said today that the State forest was only a few yards from the Waitangi treaty house and because many thousands of people were expected to visit Waitangi the fire risk would be considerably increased.
