Convention
Sir, —This is hardly a matter of transcendental importance. but, in the article about the late Mr Hugh Gaitskell, he was said to have “attended Winchester School and New College, Oxford.” The use of the word “attend” in that context would fall strangely on many an English eye or ear, because over there, generally speaking, a boy “attends” a day school but is “at” Eton, Winchester, Rugby, Wei-
lington or any other of some 40 schools of that type, which are almost exclusively boarding establishments. The same thing used to apply, if it does not now, to under-graduates at Oxford and Cambridge. Quite silly, of course, like so many other English conventions: but there it is.—Yours, etc., M.T. January 22, 1963.
